Cold Laser Therapy 101

Cold Laser Therapy 101

Cold laser therapy is a new form of healing that can greatly benefit patients suffering from pain and inflammation. This sort of therapy utilizes low levels of light to stimulate healing in patients. But don’t think that because it involves lasers that it uses the same surgical or aesthetic lasers that cause your body’s tissue to heat up. Instead, this sort of laser is more of a soft laser that’s often referred to as biostimulation, therapeutic laser or photobiomodulation.

How does it work?

Cold laser therapy works by applying the low-level light to areas that hurt. When the tissue absorbs the light, a chemical or biological reaction takes place to promote damaged cells to regenerate. Depending on the purpose of the cold laser treatment, the professional will use different light wavelengths and outputs, with higher wavelengths used for deeper penetration. When you undergo the treatment, you’ll feel the device on your skin, but it won’t hurt and will only take a few minutes to do.

What it’s used for?

Many medical professionals use cold laser therapy in a variety of ways to treat things like minor injuries and sprains, inflammation, aches and pains, skin rejuvenation, wound healing, and even in acupuncture for clients who aren’t comfortable with needles. The low-level laser beams actually stimulate acupoints with no needles. Benefits include decreased swelling in your ligaments, muscles and tendons, decreased muscle tension, reduced inflammation and improvement of your immune system.

How to know cold laser therapy is right for you?

Currently, many medical professionals are using cold laser therapy in addition to traditional medical therapies because of its benefits and the fact that it’s painless and takes minutes to complete. It’s non-invasive and has little to no side effects after each session. But it’s good to note that you’ll need a few sessions to really feel its benefits. If you’re experiencing pain, inflammation or other ailments, then cold laser therapy might be just what you’re looking for!

Orthotics Orthotics Orthotics

Why you Need Custom Orthotics

Custom orthotics can really enhance your life. Your feet are your body’s foundation so if something is wrong with them, the rest of your body can greatly be affected. If you have mysterious hip, knee, lower back or leg pain, it might just be because of a foot problem. Things like high arches, plantar fasciitis, low arches, neuromas or other foot problems can impact your general health. To combat these things, custom orthotics can provide you with much needed relief.

Customized To Your Foot’s Needs

Not only will these orthotics be customized to your specific needs and wants, but they offer more benefits than your average, runoff-the-mill orthotics you can get at any store. Over-the-counter options do cost less, but they usually only provide you with support for the inner arch of your foot, which may not be the problem or source of you pain when walking. Actually, over supporting simply one arch in your foot can actually worsen your symptoms and pain instead of relieving them.

Premium Support

Custom-made orthotics foot inserts are made especially for you and your feet. Using 3D scans or casts, custom orthotics will help achieve a more balanced foundation for your body, as well as a stabilized pelvis to help any adjustments you have last and hold better. They’re also made using quality materials for premium support.

Ultimate Comfort

Custom orthotics are way more comfy than any over-the-counter options and this is because they are crafted to fit your foot and only your foot. Everyone’s feet are different, so your custom orthotics will be made to accommodate your unique foot structure. Because of such comfort, you’ll want to wear them all the time so that you can walk and do your normal daily tasks with ease.

Reduced Pain

Inserts sold at retail stores do little to ease any pain you might have since they don’t address specific foot issues you have. But if you get custom orthotics, you’ll see a reduction of pain when you move and walk.

Need any more reasons why you need custom orthotics? Of course not because you already know that they’re beneficial, so speak to your chiropractor about getting some!  The best part – most extended health plans cover them!

Breathing 101

If you had to guess which muscle in the body works the hardest, what would you guess? Now, what if I told you that you can’t choose the heart?

Here are some clues. This muscle works every few seconds whether you’re sleeping or you’re awake. When you’re exercising, it will work harder and faster. Finally, if it stops working, then so do you!

If you haven’t guessed it, the answer is your diaphragm – the large dome-shaped muscle that separates your chest cavity from your abdomen.

breathing 2

So how does this strange looking muscle help us breathe? When the muscle contracts, it flattens out. This allows the chest cavity to expand, which happens when you breathe in. When the muscle relaxes, the air then gets pushed back out of your lungs.

breathing

But why then do some people’s chest rise and sink when they breathe in and out? This is because the diaphragm does not have to do all of the work on its own. Accessory muscles such as the trapezius and levator scapula help your lungs expand by pulling up to give you more breathing space rather than pulling down. This is especially helpful when you need more oxygen, such as during physical activity,

However, this is a double-edged sword. While these accessory muscles are helpful when we need extra oxygen, they aren’t prepared to work every few seconds for days on end like our diaphragm, and can get tired and sore if forced to do so. Anyone who has had vocal lessons will have heard the line “breathe from your belly, not your chest.” This is a cue to breathe using your diaphragm rather than your accessory muscles, as it will help both to strengthen the diaphragm as well as take the load off of your accessory muscles.
Do you have tightness or soreness in your upper back? Chances are your diaphragm needs to be retrained to take the work off of your accessory muscles.

Concussions

New findings have indicated that the old way of managing concussions and post concussion symptoms may no longer be correct.  As recent as ten years ago, National Football League (NFL) teams medical staff would check a player for a concussion by asking them “how many fingers am I holding up?”  The way that concussions and post concussion symptoms have been treated up until this point is: rest, limiting activity and avoiding bright light.  However, media attention due to lawsuits and continued research is changing the way concussions are handled by professional sports teams and this information can better help the general population as well.

So what has changed?

Firstly, there are detailed tests available to test for concussions.  This allows for proper diagnosis and ensures the patient’s safety.  It has been determined that there are various classes of concussions and they all present with different symptoms.

Secondly, concussions are no longer treated with strict bed rest and avoidance of activity.  In fact, research at various medical and rehabilitation clinics and hospitals has found that many people suffering from concussions and post concussion symptoms often recover faster when introduced to activity sooner.

If you think you may have suffered a concussion do not put yourself at risk!  Get assessed!  Concussions and chiropractic are a great mix.  I would be happy to assess your symptoms, check your cervical spine (neck) and provide you with some options.

If you still aren’t convinced….it is important to note that superstar NHL hockey player, Sidney Crosby, suffered off and on a couple of seasons ago with post concussion symptoms.  It was not until he attended a chiropractic clinic that he experienced sustained relief and returned to the National Hockey League for good.  He credits his chiropractor for allowing him to return to the game he loves.

Chiropractor for kids

Broddick Chiro Web-199Many adults go to chiropractors and benefit from a musculo-skeletal system that functions at a higher level.  I am in no way a pushy person and I prefer to allow my patients to take control of their health and make their own decisions.  However, it amazes me the number of patients that have never considered having their children or babies assessed by me.  The benefits of chiropractic in children and babies is truly unbelievable.  I see a lot of babies that come in because they are colicky or constipated.  Research has shown huge improvements in colic when parents bring their baby to a chiropractor for kids.  Unfortunately, babies cannot say to us what is bothering them but the colic can be simply a result of neck and back pain.  The birth/delivery process can be traumatic and can cause the spinal column to shift and put extra pressure on nerves that exit the spinal cord, and lead to colic or constipation in babies.  As for kids, they are generally very active and more prone to falls than adults.  Lots of falls paired with gymnastics or sports and you may understand why the spinal column can be shifted out of line and may or may not cause pain (the pain may appear later in life).  Will I be using the same techniques and force that I use with adults during adjustments on children/babies?  As a chiropractor for kids, the force used and techniques employed are completely different when compared to chiropractic for adults.  In children and babies, very minimal pressure and force is required to deliver the same great results that adults experience when being treated by the chiropractor.  Chiropractic is extremely safe for kids and babies and they often respond faster to chiropractic adjustments than adults!  Chiropractic is not for everyone, and this applies to not only adults but children and babies as well.  However, if you are interested, I would be happy to explain the procedure and what to expect during the treatment.  You have to be comfortable in order for the chiropractic treatments to be most effective.  As a chiropractor for kids, I want to make sure that each treatment is a positive experience as we all know that a bad experience can stay with you for years to come.  Dr. Ryan Broddick

Do I need foot orthotics?

This is a common question at the clinic.  As a chiropractor, I can help relieve various musculoskeletal aches and pains but many patients are unaware of the benefits of foot orthotics and that many chiropractors are able to prescribe them.  Did you know that problems with the arches in your feet, shape of the feet or the positioning of your feet can lead to pain higher up?  There has been endless published research studies that have shown a link between foot “issues” and ankle, knee, hip, low back and even upper back and neck pain.  It is hard to imagine the link but it does exist!  I am not saying that all pain can be traced back to the feet, but if treatments are not helping, or if you would like your treatments to last longer then this is something to consider checking out.  At the clinic, we offer a digital foot scan which evaluates how the feet are positioned and where the high and low pressure point areas are located.  We compare your scan to what is considered “normal” and check your gait (the way you walk) and find out what kind of pain you are experiencing.  If you are a candidate for foot orthotics then additional measurements are taken and a foam cast is taken of your feet.  This final step allows the orthotic manufacturing laboratory to custom fit an orthotic to your specific feet.  The patient’s sex, weight, age, activity level, occupation and footwear worn are all considered when choosing correct foot orthotics.

Should I crack my knuckles or neck or back myself?

I hear this question at the clinic all the time!  Many people experience relief by “cracking” themselves and if you do not partake in this practice I am sure you know a friend or family member who does.  This week I had a patient ask if it is okay if they get their child to walk on their back.  I have also had patients ask me if it is okay if they get their spouse to “crack” their back by lifting them up in awkward positions or pushing down on them while lying face down.  Growing up, my parents would get upset with my sister cracking her knuckles and they would say that this would cause arthritis or damage to her hands. Here are my thoughts on all of this…..

Is it safe to “crack” my own neck or back?  Is it okay if my spouse or friend “crack” my back or to have my child walk on my back?…. First off, “cracking your own back” and “having your back adjusted by a chiropractor” are two very different things.  Cracking your back requires no precision, it is not specific and it may or may not “move” the joint that is actually locked up and causing the tension that you feel.  In general, it will likely “crack” a joint above or below the problem area and despite hearing a “pop” which is accompanied by release of endorphins (feel good chemicals in our body) it is not correcting the issue.  Adjusting your back requires training in palpation (chiropractors receive years of training) which allows us to identify the restricted joint.  Once the problem area is identified the chiropractor can apply the correct amount of force to the exact area (again, this requires years of training to perfect this).  The amount of force used in the adjustment is determined by the age of the person, their sex, medical history (osteoporosis? heart issues?), weight and height.  So my question for you is….would you prefer to have someone with no training or education on manipulation and adjusting techniques “crack” your back or a person with a Doctorate, 8 years of education with 4 years dedicated to practising and learning the proper force, technique and skills necessary to adjust various areas of the spine and extremities?

Will I get arthritis if I crack my knuckles?…. believe it or not a California doctor named Donald Unger won a Nobel prize a few years ago for testing this.  He cracked the knuckle of his one hand at least twice a day for 50 years and did not crack the other.  His conclusion: no definitive changes or increased arthritis was found in the knuckle that was cracked.  (Arthritis and Rheumatism, Vol. 41, No. 5, in 1998).

I will keep this post short and sweet, I hope that you learned something from this and please feel free to contact the office if you have any further questions –  Dr. Ryan Broddick
